Frequently Asked Questions…

what is cbt therapy?

CBT Therapy is a talking therapy that helps us to become aware of and change our “unhelpful thoughts and “unhelpful behaviours”. The CBT model says that it is our “unhelpful thoughts” that create our distressing and overwhelming emotions which often lead to negative behaviour and unwelcome physical changes in our bodies. So by changing the way we think and creating a kinder, balanced and more realistic thinking style, we can alleviate a large part of our own emotional distress and “problems”.

The CBT model also says that our “unhelpful behaviour patterns” cause us to then think in an “unhelpful way” which then causes all the difficulties and changes we have just mentioned.

So by recognising and changing our “unhelpful behaviour into more “helpful behaviour” we can reduce the difficulties we are unknowingly creating for ourselves.

Apart from CBT) techniques we also use affirmation to help our clients deal with their thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

This is probably the most frequently asked question about CBT. The answer is an honest “at this stage, we don’t know”. We will need to meet you for an assessment, and gain a better understanding of your difficulties before we can say how many sessions you will need. CBT is not a “one size fits all” approach and we will therefore want to find out more about your difficulties. CBT is time-limited; typically, it lasts between 5-20 sessions. However, if a problem is long-standing (has been around for many years) or you have multiple problems, therapy can last longer than 20 sessions. Duration of therapy depends on the nature of your problems and on your progress.

HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT TO FEEL BETTER?

Some individuals find it helpful to just come and talk to somebody about their difficulties, especially if this is the first time they are opening up, however, and contrary to popular belief, CBT is not a “quick-fix” therapy; therapy is a process, and it can take a few sessions for you to start to benefit from the therapeutic techniques that your therapist will teach you

why should i choose cbt over other therapies?

There are a lot of “talking therapies” available, with some offering longer-term therapy (traditionally, psychoanalysis lasts over one year). CBT is a relatively short-term therapy (up to 20 sessions), and is goal-focused.
